TENSIONS
What Holds Culture Together?
Armature Magazine explores the systems that sustain cultural life. These are the visible and invisible infrastructures that allow art to circulate, endure, and matter.
Art Authority Round Table × Armature: TENSIONS is the live extension of that inquiry.
This is not a panel series.
It is a structured, recurring conversation about the forces shaping the contemporary art ecosystem.
Every second week, we convene artists, curators, corporate collection leaders, technologists, educators, and institutional voices to examine one defining tension at a time.
Because culture does not move in straight lines.
It moves through friction.
The Format
Each session centres on a single structural tension. A pair of forces that pull against one another within the art world.
For Issue 02 of Armature, the theme is TRUST.
Across six sessions, we explore how trust is built, strained, and negotiated across institutions, markets, technologies, and communities.
Each Round Table is:
• 60 minutes
• Hosted live on Zoom
• Moderated by Tamzin Lovell
• Recorded and published on YouTube
We begin with one question:
Where do you feel this tension in your work?
From there, we think in public.
Why TENSIONS?
The art world is often described in terms of consensus — shared values, shared commitments, shared cultural purpose.
But the deeper reality is structural tension:
Authority requires accountability.
Innovation tests integrity.
Access collides with gatekeeping.
Institutions depend on communities — and sometimes resist them.
Rather than smoothing these contradictions, we sit inside them.
TENSIONS is a space for informed disagreement, cross-sector exchange, and critical clarity.
Who Participates?
Each session brings together:
• Institutional leaders
• Artists and cultural practitioners
• Corporate collection representatives
• Curators and researchers
• Technologists and digital custodians
• Educators and policy thinkers
We intentionally include at least one representative from a corporate collection in every session — recognising that corporate collections are not peripheral observers, but active cultural actors.
Trust between institutions, artists, and corporations is not assumed. It is built.
Why?
Cultural trust is under pressure.
As collections digitise, markets globalise, AI systems reshape authorship, and institutions re-evaluate their mandates, the infrastructure of trust becomes more complex.
These conversations are not theoretical.
They influence:
• Acquisition strategies
• Governance decisions
• ESG positioning
• Cultural diplomacy
• Public reputation
• Long-term stewardship
Art Authority Round Table exists to create a space where these questions can be examined with rigour and candour.
The TRUST Season
Issue 02 of Armature focuses on TRUST.
The TENSIONS season, aligned to this issue explores:
• Transparency ⟷ Discretion
• Institutions ⟷ Communities
• Access ⟷ Gatekeeping
• Innovation ⟷ Integrity
• Value ⟷ Meaning
• Disruption ⟷ Responsibility
Each session stands alone.
Together, they form a structured inquiry into what holds cultural systems in place — and where they strain.
